You sign up, start swiping, and a few days later a coworker says they saw you on Tinder. It can feel as though the app connected the two of you through your phones.
That is not necessary for the encounter to happen.
Tinder uses its Discovery and recommendation system to show profiles to other Tinder users. Location and Discovery preferences help determine which profiles users see, along with Tinder’s recommendation system. Tinder describes age, distance, sexual orientation, and similar Discovery settings primarily as controls for who you see, rather than a private audience list that determines exactly who is allowed to see you.
So if someone you know also uses Tinder in your area, your profile can eventually appear in their recommendations without Tinder having notified them about you.
That could include a coworker, neighbor, friend, relative, ex, or anyone else who happens to be using Tinder in the same general dating pool.
Does Tinder Use Your Phone Contacts Automatically?
Tinder has access to your contacts only when you give the relevant permission for a feature that uses them, such as Block Contacts.

Does Changing Your Distance Setting Hide You From People Nearby?
Not reliably.
This is a common piece of Tinder privacy advice, but it misunderstands what the distance slider actually does.
Tinder describes age, distance, sexual orientation, and similar Discovery preferences as settings that customize who you see in Discovery. Tinder may even show you people slightly outside those ranges unless you mark age or distance as dealbreakers.
That means setting your distance to five miles instead of twenty should not be treated as a privacy setting that guarantees fewer people can see you.

Possibly.
This is different from Tinder notifying your contacts that you joined. Tinder has activity indicators that can reveal recent use to other Tinder users.
